The Woodcock is a small upland bird that favors moist woodlands, which are accessible to streams and swampy landscapes.  Often referred to as Timberdoodle, Woody, or the Bog Snipe, the Woodcock is a migratory bird that ranges across much of the Eastern half of the United States and Canada.  This shy bird is very well camouflaged and difficult to spot on the forest ground when drilling for worms. The most distinct characteristic of the Woodcock is it’s long, thin, flexible bill which is perfect for probing moist soil for their favorite foods.  The nighttime courtship display is another unique part of the Timberdoodle’s lore.  The male Woodcock selects an open area in a meadow or forest opening for his curios little back and forth swaying dance and twirling display flights.
